Welcome to CLA Junior High!

I am so glad you are considering California Lutheran for your student. My name is Michael Ash, and I have been teaching in Lutheran schools for 29 years in roles such as principal, grade school teacher, high school teacher, and athletic director. It is a joy to teach in a Christ-centered, multi-grade classroom like CLA where students grow academically, spiritually, and socially together. In our classroom, Christ is at the center of all we do.

In our academic program, faith is woven into every subject, grounding students in the truths of the Bible while encouraging them to think deeply, work diligently, and develop their God-given gifts. Learning here is not just about gaining knowledge — it is about shaping hearts and minds for a life of faithful service to Jesus Christ, our Savior.

We are committed to building a strong foundation that equips students to rise and meet future challenges with confidence and purpose. In our multi-grade setting, they learn leadership, responsibility, and collaboration, all within a caring Christian community. It is a privilege to partner with families in guiding students to grow in wisdom, character, and faith. I can’t wait to meet you, so that together we can discover whether California Lutheran is a good fit for your child and your family.

Yours in Christ,

Michael Ash

Our Educational Philosophy

Equipped to Rise reflects our commitment to preparing students for lives of meaningful impact. We accomplish this by:

Challenging with Purpose

We believe students rise best when learning is intentional, meaningful, and appropriately challenging. Our academic program sets high expectations while promoting curiosity, resilience, and a love of learning. We guide students to think critically, engage deeply with content, and embrace challenges as part of the growth process.

Personalizing the Journey

We recognize that students grow at different rates and benefit from instruction that meets their individual needs. Our smaller class sizes and relational culture allow teachers to respond to individual needs through differentiation, timely feedback, and research-based instruction. Students are known and actively supported as they grow.

Preparing for Impact

We prepare students to use what they’ve learned beyond the classroom. Our academic program emphasizes real-world application, cross-disciplinary thinking, and the development of transferable skills. We want students to graduate ready to contribute as they lead, collaborate, and solve problems in a rapidly changing world.

“Teachers are invested in their students and develop genuine relationships with them. I’ve seen that so clearly with my daughter. Because of the support and encouragement from her teacher, she’s not only excelling in math, but her language comprehension is already at a senior high school level. Even more important to us, we know she is encouraged and supported every day, and her faith continues to grow. Care and community in a Christian setting at California Lutheran Academy are cherished by our family.”
