Elementary Curriculum Overview

In grades K-4, we have a well-rounded curriculum that creates a solid foundation for lifelong learning. Rather than being limited to one set of standards, we thoughtfully draw from multiple benchmarks to create clear, purposeful learning targets for every grade level. We’ve examined a wide variety of curricula and chosen the very best to align with our education philosophy.

Most importantly, every subject is taught through the lens of God’s Word, helping students grow not only in knowledge but in wisdom, faith, and a Christ-centered understanding of the world around them.

Word of God

At California Lutheran Academy, God’s Word is woven into daily learning through lessons from the Bible, study of the Commandments, and the Christian creeds and applications to everyday life. Students joyfully sing songs of praise and grow in faith as they study and memorize verses from Scripture.

Mathematics

Our elementary grades math program builds strong thinkers by covering all areas of mathematics, from pattern recognition and general number sense to operations, algebraic thinking, measurement, data, and geometry concepts. CLA is equipping students with skills that make sense of the world around them.

Science

CLA K-4 students learn about life, earth, and physical science through engaging, hands-on exploration. As they investigate, build, and experiment, they learn to ask thoughtful questions and apply both the scientific and engineering design processes, turning curiosity into discovery.

Language Arts

The CLA language arts curriculum brings literacy to life! Students grow as confident readers and writers through engaging instruction in reading, phonics, writing, grammar, spelling, morphology, and vocabulary. All work to build strong communication skills that equip students to rise to every challenge and opportunity.

Social Studies

CLA K-4 students explore the world around them through engaging studies in social studies and California history, building an understanding of communities, cultures, and the rich story of our state.

Physical Education

In Physical Education, our K–4 students get moving and energized as they learn the foundations of healthy living. Through active games, team sports, and fitness and skill-building activities, they develop coordination, confidence, and a lifelong appreciation for staying active.

The Arts

CLA students explore the world of music through learning to read music, understanding general music concepts, and singing. They also have the opportunity to take piano lessons during the school day. Our arts program extends into hands-on art instruction, where students discover creative techniques and explore the richness of art history.

CLA Students Rise and Shine!

We measure each student’s academic progress so that we can provide a personalized learning path for all. We use the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment to gain detailed data on each student’s learning path.

In grades K-8 at CLA:

  • 35 percent of students are above the 80th percentile
  • 50 percent are above the 60th percentile

These learning benchmarks are well above the local, state, and national averages.

“We have had such a wonderful experience at CLA. Our daughter was having some difficulty with reading and required a little additional help at the start of the school year. Her teacher, Mrs. Glowicki, identified concerns early and invested a significant amount of her extra time and effort to get her up to speed. She really went above any expectation a parent could have from a teacher. Because CLA is so academically strong, we know our children are getting the best education they can, rooted in God’s Word.“
